Autumn is right around the corner, and event organizers across McMinn County are planning festivals and activities for residents and visitors alike. There are plenty of family-friendly events where kids can enjoy face-painting and games, along with opportunities for adults to enjoy fun evenings out.
“You can do a different activity every day through September and October and see all the cool things that local businesses are working on,” says Brianna Baker, Tourism Coordinator for Discover McMinn. “There are fairs and festivals and opportunities to learn about history in the area.”
Here’s everything you need to know to get the most out of fall in McMinn County. Mark your calendars for some of these notable events, but also save space for exploring this beautiful corner of Tennessee — especially when the leaves start to change.
Several Classic Fall Events Are Returning to McMinn County
Families in McMinn County look forward to fall traditions as various organizations bring back classic autumn events. The Mayfield Farm Park and Guthrie Pumpkin Farm and Corn Maze are two top choices for families that want to pick out pumpkins, run through fields of corn, and meet animal friends. There are plenty of age-appropriate activities, ranging from corn kernel boxes for toddlers to rides for older kids.
Local fall festivals are also returning this year. The Friend Green Tomato Festival is coming back to Niota in September, along with the Etowah Fall Festival at the L&N Depot. The Pumpkintown Festival on October 11 in Downtown Athens has become a favorite event in the region, attracting more than 16,000 attendees annually. This event stands out because of the annual PowWow that showcases and educates on Native American heritage.
Each festival features local vendors, arts and crafts, live music, and delicious food options. Some festivals have multiple stages with performances running throughout the day.
Enjoy Halloween Events for All Scare Levels

Anyone in McMinn County who celebrates Halloween can find events to attend through September and October. The Scream Chamber in Athens is one of the top haunted houses in the area. Along with classic scares, visitors can stick around to enjoy escape rooms, axe throwing, and other activities.
Fright Fest is also coming to Downtown Athens and will offer a kid-friendly Halloween event. Children can meet scary (and not-so-scary) characters, and families can attend a movie night under the stars.
Dining with the Dead isn’t necessarily a Halloween event, but it falls in October and allows adults to hear stories about families buried in the region. Attendees can sit around the campfire and enjoy a hearty meal while learning what life was like in centuries past.
Many of these events run throughout the Halloween season, but some are limited to a few select days. Buy your tickets in advance, just in case they sell out.
October is a Beautiful Time to Discover McMinn County
September and October both provide wonderful opportunities for fall exploration across the Overhill Region of Tennessee. The fall foliage peaks in late October, but leaves can start to change in September, depending on the weather each year.
“McMinn County is exceptionally beautiful in the fall as the leaves change,” says Baker. “The L&N Depot in Etowah is gorgeous with clear mountain views, and the Eureka Trail has some of the best fall colors as you head toward Englewood.”
The Hiwassee Railroad Loop runs throughout the warm months, but can’t be missed during this time. Whether you love train journeys or stunning natural views, this is a great family activity and weekend excursion.
Ice Cream Tastes Just as Good in the Fall
McMinn is the Sweetest County in Tennessee and is home to Mayfield Dairy. Visitors can explore the Scoop Loop and try different flavors of ice cream at local confectioneries across the region. Most ice cream parlors remain open through the fall and winter months, so a sweet treat is always nearby.
“Ice cream tastes just as good in the fall,” says Baker. “Some locations even create seasonal flavors you can only enjoy for a few weeks each year.”
Halloween is known for candy, but there’s always room for ice cream. A visit to one of McMinn County’s parlors is the cherry on top of any vacation.
