The Niota Model Train Show Connects Visitors to Tennessee’s Rail History
11 Mar 2026
News
Visitors to McMinn County, Tennessee, can attend a model train show located inside a historic train depot from April 25 to 26, 2026. This annual event is put on by the City of Niota and features model train displays, educational speakers, and activities for kids.
“Nine years ago, we were looking for ways to celebrate National Train Day, and our offices used to be located inside the historic train depot,” says Lois Preece, Mayor of Niota. “We decided to host a model train show, and the event has grown every year ever since.
There is plenty of room inside the train depot at 201 W Main St for the show. However, organizers have already expanded the event onto the outdoor covered porch and can use extra rooms if needed.
The Model Train Show is a fun event for all who attend, but it also reflects the Overhill region’s close connection with trains and rail history. You can pair this weekend with other train-based events for the kids in your family – and the kids at heart.
The Model Train Show Brings Out Collectors and Enthusiasts

The Niota Model Train Show runs from 10 AM to 4 PM on Saturday and from 11 AM to 4 PM on Sunday. There will be model train displays, opportunities to swap parts and accessories, and discussions around trains as a whole. There will even be a handcar out front that kids can test out on a circular track.
Joe Guy, McMinn County Sheriff and County Historian, is the speaker booked for Saturday. He has written multiple books on the region's history and can connect different events in time to the construction of the rail lines. The organizers have booked a train historian to speak on Sunday.
“The entire show is free, and a lot of families come together to see the trains,” says Preece. “Older people bring their grandchildren, making it a multi-generational event. There isn’t an age range that isn’t represented or interested in trains.”
The City of Niota is currently accepting vendors for the event. The cost is $20, and the vendors must be train-related.
The Niota Train Depot is One of the Oldest in the State
If you can’t make the Model Train Show in April, it’s still worth visiting the Niota Train Depot throughout the year. It is one of the oldest standing depots in Tennessee. The Niota Train Depot was built in 1854 and is protected by a historic preservation committee.
Mayor Preece says tours of the depot are available to visitors who stop by the Niota City Hall down the street. There is also a playground on-site for kids
The Niota Train Depot is an event space that hosts weddings, parties, and other celebrations year-round. Potential event organizers can contact Tammy Carver at Niota City Hall, 423-568-2584, to ask about availability. This is also the number to call to tour the depot.
Other upcoming public events at the Niota Train Depot this year include a Spring Tea (sold out), an Easter Egg Hunt, and an Easter Bike Parade for kids. The City of Niota is also known for its Fried Green Tomato Festival in September. Check out the Discover McMinn events calendar to see what else is happening around the region.
