The Mayfield Dairy Farms Visitor Center in Athens invites visitors to see “behind the scenes” of one of the South’s most beloved dairies. Guided plant tours show how Mayfield milk and ice cream are made – from the raw milk processing to bottling and packaging – all while sharing the company’s history since 1910. Tour participants don hairnets and walk along indoor observation corridors above the production lines. After the tour, guests can enjoy a generous scoop of Mayfield’s famous ice cream at the old-fashioned ice cream parlor (each tour ticket comes with a free scoop). A gift shop offers Mayfield souvenirs and dairy products to take home. The Visitor Center is typically open Monday–Saturday (closed Wednesdays & Sundays) with a small admission fee for tours, making it a fun and educational stop halfway between Chattanooga and Knoxville.
