The historic L&N Depot in Etowah – built in 1906 – now houses the Etowah Depot Museum and serves as a living reminder of the town’s railroad origins. This two-story Victorian railroad station was the first building erected in Etowah (a planned L&N Railroad town) and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Downstairs, museum exhibits tell the story of Etowah’s creation by the Louisville & Nashville Railroad and its role as a division headquarters. Upstairs, a gallery offers changing exhibits and windows where visitors can watch trains switching in the active rail yard below. The depot is also home to the “Hiwassee River Rail Adventure” excursion train ticket office and hosts community festivals on its lawn (like the Old Fashioned 4th of July). Admission is free, and the museum is open on weekdays (9am–4pm) and during special events.
